Welsh Lib Dems Stand Up for 168,000 Welsh Pensioners

2.59.07pm GMT Tue 6th Mar 2007

Today, the Welsh Liberal Democrats signed a motion in parliament urging the Government to bring forward the introduction of the earnings link with the basic state pension before 2012 as proposed by the Government. Commenting, Jenny Willott, Welsh Liberal Democrat MP and Member of the House of Commons Work and Pensions Select Committee, said:

"Around 28,000 Welsh pensioners will die every year between now and 2012 before our pension system is finally reformed and the earnings link to the basic state pension is finally restored - that's 168,000 Welsh pensioners. This is utterly unacceptable.

"Dropping the link between pensions and inflation and reintroducing the earnings link would help to lift pensioner's income back towards an acceptable and respectable level.

"But by delaying the re-introduction of the earnings link until 2012, the Government is effectively abandoning a generation of Welsh pensioners to poverty in retirement.

"This is simply not good enough. Up to half of all Welsh pensioners live in poverty today. The Government has a duty to ensure that every pensioner will be given a fair deal and a decent honest pension both today and in the future."
