Jenny Willott - Standing up for Cardiff Central

Government's Big Brother Facebook plans "Deeply Troubling"

12.00.00am GMT Wed 25th Mar 2009

Commenting on Government plans under the Intercept Modernisation Programme to monitor social networking sites such as Facebook, Bebo and Myspace, Jenny Willott, Welsh Liberal Democrat MP for Cardiff Central, said:

"These proposals are deeply troubling and show how obsessed this Government is with hoarding ever greater quantities of people's personal information.

"The Government needs to come clean over why they need this information, how their monitoring of social networking sites would work and what data they would retain. They also need to show how it would be kept secure.

"We also need guarantees that terrorism legislation won't be abused to access retained Facebook data for frivolous purposes."
