Government allowing energy companies to overcharge Welsh customers - Willott

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 25th Jun 2009

Commenting on today's Consumer Focus report, which claims that energy companies are over-charging customers by not passing cost cuts to the consumer, Jenny Willott, Welsh Liberal Democrat MP for Cardiff Central, said:

"The Government soft touch approach to the energy companies has allowed them to grossly overcharge their customers.

"Energy companies were quick to hike up prices when costs rose, but very slow to bring them down now costs have fallen. Welsh households should be looking at an average cut in their energy bills of £157 each this year.

"People have been left paying shockingly high fuel bills. The weather may be warm now, but it is expected that one in four Welsh households will be living in fuel poverty and struggling to pay their energy bills this winter."
