CARDIFF MUST CHALLENGE PARTIES' CLIMATE CHANGE CREDENTIALS

12.00.00am GMT Thu 29th Oct 2009

In a week where EU leaders meet to try to agree an EU funding pledge ahead of the Copenhagen climate summit, Jenny Willott, Welsh Liberal Democrat MP for Cardiff Central, will be facing questions from local Cardiff residents this Saturday, at a Friends of the Earth Cymru organised 'question time' style event, on the political parties' policies on climate change.

Commenting ahead of the Cardiff-based event, Jenny said:

"Tackling climate change is a no-brainer. It's a choice between a cleaner, healthier, safer and more prosperous future for all, and an unprecedented environmental and human disaster.

"Climate change will be the issue that defines this and future generations, and so Cardiff residents have every right to pin down their politicians over exactly how they plan to tackle it.

"The debate over climate change is too often left to a small group of international negotiators. But this is something that affects everyone and so we all deserve to get involved in the debate.

"I urge anyone who is interested to come to this free and unique event."

Commenting ahead of the European Council summit, Jenny said:

"Everyone is looking to the EU to take the lead on climate change. This means putting our money where our mouths are. Only then, will developing countries come onboard and sign up to an ambitious global deal to combat climate change."

The event called 'Trick or Treat' will be run in the format of the BBC's famous 'Question Time' show.

It will take place this Saturday 1st November, from 3pm to 4pm, in the 1st floor meeting room of the Old Library in The Hayes.

The meeting will be chaired by Daran Hill from the political consultancy Positif Politics.

Answering questions will be Raoul Bhambral, Cardiff Friends of the Earth; Jenny Willott, Liberal Democrat MP for Cardiff Central; Karen Robson, Conservative candidate prospective Parliamentary candidate; Jenny Rathbone, Labour prospective Parliamentary candidate and Jill Evans, Plaid Cymru MEP for Wales.
